Florida Drowning Prevention Program: Drown Zero Saving Lives on the Space Coast
Florida’s beaches are beautiful—but they can also be dangerous. That’s why the Drown Zero initiative was created: a Florida drowning prevention program designed to reduce water-related deaths using public-access flotation ring stations. Founded by Wyatt Werneth, Drown Zero makes beaches safer through education, awareness, and community-powered rescue tools.
How Drown Zero Works
Drown Zero stations feature highly visible orange life rings with clear emergency instructions. These are installed at key beach access points across the state. In an emergency, bystanders can use the ring to stabilize a swimmer in distress while calling 911. Additionally, the program encourages a safer approach with its motto: “Throw, Don’t Go.”
Why These Stations Matter
Time is everything during a water emergency. By providing immediate access to flotation, Drown Zero empowers everyday people to take action. As a result, the program has already prevented multiple tragedies along the coast. These stations do not replace lifeguards—but they enhance safety during critical moments when help might not be close by.
Where It’s Happening
From Cocoa Beach to Indian River and Flagler Beach, Drown Zero is growing thanks to collaboration between Rotary Clubs, municipalities, and local advocates. Over 400 stations are now installed in Florida, and many more are planned. For example, Brevard County has over 200 stations with additional expansions underway.
Local Support from Community Leaders
Bobby Freeman, a top Cocoa Beach Realtor with McCoy Freeman Compass, is a proud sponsor of the Drown Zero program. His support reflects a deep investment in the safety and quality of life along Florida’s Space Coast. As Bobby says, “Safe beaches build strong communities.”
How to Get Involved
You don’t need to be a lifeguard to save a life. Community members and businesses can sponsor a flotation station for about $500. This small contribution can have a life-changing impact. To become a sponsor or learn more, visit DrownZero.com.
